_ 97 _ If any case that is covered by that ordinance for which they have competence up to the death sentence, they are not to execute the sentences which they give in any of these cases if the convicted are squires or gentlemen of my house or of other higher rank. Before the sentence is carried out they are to inform the Viceroy so that the sentences can be executed with his agreement. The said Chief Justices may impose fines of up to two thousand reals for the legal expenses, and there is to be no appeal against any such judgment. The said Chief Justices will not undertake actions of any kind without a previous summary of evidence in accordance with the new Law of Reform, which in this respect and all others they are to obey in accordance with its legal contents. They are to hold the same sessions district corregidores are obliged to conduct. This is to be done in the usual public places where Judges hold their sessions and they are not to do it in their own houses. The said Chief Justices are to conduct all the investigations which district corregidores are obliged to conduct in accordance with my ordinances, laws and provisional laws in these statutes under the penalties laid down in them in the cases in which they apply.
