On Sunday we heard our Mass upon the island in a grove of high trees, and after Mass we returned to our naos and forthwith set sail and went away on our course with many fowls and goats and pigeons, battered here for some small yellow glass beads. Item: The naos of these lands are large and without decks, built without nails, being secured by coir ropes, and the small boats are built likewise. The sails are of matted palm and their mariners have Genoese needles by which they steer, and quadrants and sailing charts. Item: The palm trees of this land yield fruit as large as melons and the pith within is what they eat, of which the taste is like the galanal root and hazelnut mixed together, and there is an abundance of cucumbers and melons which they brought to us for barter.
