The Portuguese in the Sea of Oman

_ 204 _ at the beginning of 1503. But rather than hand over to his conqueror the forty Portuguese under his guard, the King of Cochin fled with his protêgés to the sacred island of Vaipin(A). The situation turned in his favour from September with the arrival of Francisco and Afonso de Albuquerque who rapidly chased out the Calicut troops and restored his lands and rights to the King of Cochin(B). This restoration was again endangered at the start of 1504, some days after the Albuquerques' fleet had set off again on the route to Portugal. These two captains had left in Cochin a defence force in keeping with their limited means: two caravels and a few hundred men, commanded by Duarte Pacheco Pereira(C).
