The Portuguese in the Sea of Oman

_ 51 _ a place called Malindi, which is thirty leagues from Mombasa. Between Mombasa and that city there are the following places: Matapeva, Toça-menguo and Kilifi. On Easter Sunday, the Moors we had captured told us that there were four ships with Christians from India in the city of Malindi, and if we would take them there they would personally provide us with Christian pilots and whatever we wanted, such as meat, water, wood and other items. The captain-major wanted very much to have pilots from that country, so after discussing the matter with the Moors, we anchored half a leagues from the shore, in front of the city. The townspeople did not dare approach the ships because they had already been informed and were aware that we had captured a boat with some Moors. On Monday morning, the captain-major gave orders for the old Moor to be put on a sandbank opposite the town. An almadia went there to fetch him, and the Moor told the King what the captain wanted and how he would be delighted to make peace with him. After supper the Moor returned in a zavra in which the King of the city sent one of his nobles, a sharif and three sheep. He sent word to the captain that he too would be pleased for there to be a peace treaty between them and to be on good terms, and if he needed anything from his land he would gladly
