The Portuguese in the Sea of Oman

_ 80 _ The captain agreed and said that he would write to his brother to send the merchandise to them. They said that that was acceptable and that when it arrived, they would let them go at once to their ships. The captain wrote to his brother straightaway to send him certain goods, which he promptly dispatched. As soon as they received them they allowed him to go to the ships, while two men stayed with them ashore. We were all in very high spirits and we gave thanks to Our Lord for saving us from such men, who were like beasts, devoid of reason, because we well knew that when the captain arrived on board, even though some people remained behind, they would do them no harm. When the captain reached the ships, he decided not to send any more merchandise for the time being. Five days later, the captain sent word to the king reminding him of the fact that he had given orders for him to return to his ships, but certain of his men were reluctant to allow him to do so and had detained him for a day and a night on route. He had already put the merchandise ashore, as instructed, but the Moors had come there and reduced the price. He wanted to see what the king would order in this matter, because he would not give him any of the goods, though both he and his ships were at his service.
