_ 84 _ When the time came for us to leave, the captain sent a present made of amber to the king and he also gave him corals and many other items. He informed him that he wanted to return to Portugal and if the king would send some men with him to the King of Portugal, he would leave a factor, a clerk and several other men there with the merchandise. He also asked him to send one bahar of cinnamon and another of cloves to his Lord the King, as a sample, as well as any other spice that he thought fit. The factor, meanwhile, would mint some coins and pay him for them if he so wished. When this message from the captain arrived at the place where the king was staying, four days passed before they were able to talk. When the messager came before the king, he scowled angrily at him and asked him what he wanted. The latter delivered the captain's message to him, in the way described above, and explained that the captain had sent him with a present. The king told him to give what he had brought to his factor because he had no wish to see it. He told him to inform the captain that, if he wanted to leave, he should give him six hundred xerafins, and then he could go, as that was the custom of the country and those that came to it. Diogo Dias, who brought the message, said that he would return with this reply to the captain.
