Diogo Dias replied that it was because the king had not allowed them to return to their ships and had kept them prisoner in the city. The king told him that he had done well and again asked him if the factor had requested anything from him, hinting that he was totally ignorant of what the factor had done, but that the latter had acted so that he would give him something. He then said against the factor, "Does he not know that a short while ago I had another factor executed because he demanded customs dues from some merchants who came to this country?" The king added, "Go to the ships with the others who are with you and tell the captain to send me the men that he has detained.
