The Portuguese in the Sea of Oman

_ 89 _ When news reached the king that we had left for Portugal and as he was no longer able to do what he wanted, he decided to remedy what had earlier caused the problem. He summoned Diogo Dias, whom he treated with great friendliness when he came into his presence (though he had not done so before when he brought him the present), he asked him why the captain had seized his men. Diogo Dias replied that it was because the king had not allowed them to return to their ships and had kept them prisoner in the city. The king told him that he had done well and again asked him if the factor had requested anything from him, hinting that he was totally ignorant of what the factor had done, but that the latter had acted so that he would give him something. He then said against the factor, "Does he not know that a short while ago I had another factor executed because he demanded customs dues from some merchants who came to this country?" The king added, "Go to the ships with the others who are with you and tell the captain to send me the men that he has detained. Let him send the padrão that he wanted to set up ashore and give orders to those who brought you to bring and erect it. Meanwhile, you will remain in this country with the merchandise."
