The Portuguese in the Sea of Oman

_ 127 _ Captain-in-Chief that he would have already sent the Portuguese but he feared that if they were sent back they would be harmed, so he begged him to send a guarantee to be prepared to be sent the next morning. But as soon as it was night the Moor, who contrived everything with treachery, sent many fighting men to the fortress and made a sudden attack on our men, who were lying asleep on the beach because of the heat, and many of them were killed and wounded. They made for the sea and a parão that was close by, and the Moors all gathered together with much shouting. When they heard this on board the ships, the Captainin-Chief came up and ordered them to go to the water’s edge to collect the Portuguese, but not to go ashore; which they did, going close in to the shore and calling out to see if any Portuguese came (and the Moors fired many arrows at them), and they collected the parao. Then the Captainin-Chief ordered the ships to fire, and they continued to do so until morning. When the firing was heard by the ships on the other side of the city they did the same, so a great deal of damage was done and many houses knocked down, which killed many people.
