_ 141 _ After they left town, they went to another called Sohar. They found it almost empty as all had been left before our arrival. However, the Alcaide of the fortress and a few of the most important Moors did not leave so that the place would not be destroyed. As they saw they could not defend the town they came to an agreement with Afonso de Albuquerque in which they solemnly undertook to become vassals of King Don Manuel. They sent the Alcaide to Jorge Barreto de Castro with some people to raise a flag on one of the towers of the fortress which was then handed over to him. Then, the same flag was borne on a horse followed by people making proclamations announcing that that fortress was to belong to the King of Portugal and that the Alcaide was receiving the flag from Afonso de Albuquerque, Commander in Chief of our armada. Furthermore, the town would be under obligation of paying a yearly tribute, as much as they had paid the King of Ormuz, to maintain the governor of the fortress and all the people guarding it. Afonso de Albuquerque drew up the necessary documents to set out this agreement. When Afonso de Albuquerque had stayed in this town for two days, he left for another called Khorfakan, which lies a further fifteen leagues away. He had little to do there
