The Portuguese in the Sea of Oman

_ 145 _ Minab situated on a principal river that brings water to Moghistan. Gordun Shah considered the island of Gerum opposite his lands and realized that Malik Qais not value it. But Gordun Shah hoped that although it was desert by cunning he would be able to make it into the most profitable place in the whole of Mogahistan. He therefore made light of the matter and asked the King of Qais to sell it to him, saying that Gerum was distance from Qais but so near to his own land of Moghistan that when his men went out fishing they had nowhere to shelter but n Gerum. This however often caused differences between them and King Malik’s vassals, who were the inhabitants of the island, so that in order to stop this suffering among those poor people he asked if he would sell it to him, since he himself had no income from it. Because he had little interest in the island the King of Qais likely agreed to sell if to Gordum Shah in order to please him. However as soon as this was known King Qais’s family and in particular his Queen prevented the sale. They argued that the island of Gerum was the key to the Straits of which he was Lord, and just as an iron key in itself was of no value it opened and closed a great treasure it could not be considered thus. Therefore, he should not give away that island of such importance to the whole of Moghistan.
