The Portuguese in the Sea of Oman

_ 163 _ They emptied the Nile of the Moors defending it who jumped into the sea being less afraid of it than they were of our men’s swords. The Captains in our other naos according to what each was allotted to do were no less outstanding than Afonso de Albuquerque though he attacked the most dangerous of the naos in the port. They all became masters of the naos they attacked. The Moors from the other naos, seeing the example of their compatriates likewise abandoned their boats and swum ashore to safely. Our men than left the naos that were left with no one to defend them and went into the boats and terradas they had captured all along the shore setting fire to more than thirty vessels and cutting their cables after they had put fire to them. Carried by the wind that was blowing over the island they drifted and landed on the coast of Persia. After they set fire to the boats at sea, Afonso de Albuquerque ordered that a great number of naos that were in a shipyard at the end of the environs to the city be burnt. There was no one in the city who dared defend them, such was the fear they had for the fire and sword of our people. They concentrated their efforts on saving themselves by taking refuge inside the city. They feared that our victory would give our men courage to enter the city although it was already late in the day.
