_ 174 _ a port called Bander Angon, a place where the caravans from Persia came two envoys had arrived from the King of Shiraz who were coming to ask for a certain tribute, which the Kings of Ormuz had been paying for a long time to the Kings of Persia. As the King of Shiraz was a vassal of Sheikh Ismael, who was the King of all Persia, and very close to Ormuz, he had charge of this collection, the time being due for the payment. He was sending word to his lordship because as that kingdom of Ormuz was under the protection of the King of Portugal to who he paid tribute and he was the captain, who was the author of the arrangement, he should make the reply that the King of Ormuz had to give, as his lordship would what he was able to say. Afonso d’ Albuquerque knew to some extent how the Kings of Ormuz had been paying tribute to those of Persia, though it was not as important as hitherto as was later told to him.
