Once the fleet had anchored, Afonso de Albuquerque 'sent. word to the king asking him to come and agree peace and friendship with the King of Portugal, his lord, and to place his city under his command since if he were able to enter peacefully, he would allow him to remain in his state and would leave the inhabitants with complete freedom to live as they had done up to that time. As well as this, he promised to defend the city as well as the entire kingdom and territories, from those who might threaten them. He also promised that all other captains of the King, his lord, would do the same. In reply to this message, the king sent a Moor (who later came to this kingdom) called Khwaja Biram, with a letter signed by him and Khwaja Attar. The Moor was received by Afonso de Albuquerque with much ceremony but he would not accept any of the gifts which the King sent, saying that he would accept nothing from men who were not yet his friends and that if all that he had put in his letter regarding peace and friendship were true, then he should send message the following day stating how he wished to put this into practice.
