_ 434 _ Then, I gave back the kingdom to the king himself and similarly returned the governorship to Choichatar on the understanding that the king would rule in the name of our lord the King of Portugal and would hold power until our lord the King advised him otherwise; it would be his pleasure to hand over the said kingdom and its government whenever His Majesty commanded him and to whomever I should request on His Majesty’s behalf, or whenever I showed him the King’s authority. I obliged the King of Ormuz to pay His Majesty 15,000 gold serafs every year in tribute, that is in gold, silver and pearls, and to pay this from the revenues of the kingdom, and whatever remained was to be used for paying the men who guard the city and kingdom. Then I asked him to pay 5,000 of the serafs now, to pay the wages of the ship’s men, and furthermore to give us a house for the factors of our most serene King for their dealing and merchandise, and I asked that the goods which come from Portugal should be exempt from taxes and that they should not pay any fee except that for what they purchased in the said place, they should pay the tax according to the custom of the county. And I made many other stipulations and points of importance, and the governor agreed to them. We made two documents containing the clauses listed above,
