_ 486 _ The victory proved that the King's choice of Afonso de Albuquerque as the next Governor of India was a good one(A). In 1508 Manuel did not miss the opportunity of praising him, still as 'captain of the sea','fidalgo of our household, most worthy of such a rank for his valour and his experience of the sea'(B).On 19 June 1508 the King asked the Archbishop of Braga to hold a solemn procession in gratitude for favours bestowed in India. In this letter he says that; before Tristão da Cunha left India, Moors brought the news that Ormuz had surrendered to Afonso de Albuquerque and had become our tributary state, as has another important city of those parts. This information can be considered certain because it comes from our enemies and is to their disadvantage and discomfort; it could not have come in any other way because the fleet led by Afonso de Albuquerque is so occupied, and could not have been brought by our people because the weather in those parts is such that it is not possible for most to sail except at certain times in each direction; the Moors received this message by land(C). The (A) Afonso de Albuquerque swore fealty to the King on his secret nomination to the governorship of India on 27 February 1506. Ibid., vol.IV,p.193. (B) Ibid.,vol.II,p.423. (C) Ibid. vol.II, p.425.
