_ 497 _ and the Governor Rais Nuruddin Fali(A). When they reached Ormuz the Portuguese won the support of the King and the Governor, who handed over to them the fortress which had been begun in 1507.The opposition came from Rais Hamid, who was killed by some of Albuquerque's captains. Thus began the period of Portuguese rule in the kingdom of Ormuz, which included numerous islands in the Gulf, some towns on the coasts of Arabia and Persia, and dominance of the maritime routes of the land-bound sea as far as Basra(B). The death of Rais Hamid provoked a strong reaction among his followers, who threatened another rising. The presence of the King of Ormuz at Albuquerque's side appeased a large part of the Ormuz people, nevertheless Hamid's brothers and kinsmen took refuge 'in the King's fortress, threatening that they had the children of King Saifuddin, and controlled the treasury, arms and artillery, and giving the King and the Commander to understand that they would create another king and would defend themselves in the fortress; and as soon as they were inside it they made ready all the guns.(C) (A) On Rais Nuruddin Fali see J.Aubin, 'Le royaumes d'Ormuz au début du XVI siècle', op. cit, p. 148.
