The fleet which we sent last year, 1506, to India and likewise to do certain things in our service in the area of Ethiopia and at the mouth of the Red Sea in which Tristão da Cunha, fidalgo of our house and member of our Council, sailed as commander-in-chief, has arrived. We have thereby learnt how well all our affairs in those parts are proceeding, praise be to Our Lord, and likewise how we were served by Tristão da Cunha and our servants and men whom we sent with him. These are all matters in which our kingdoms and all our compatriots may feel great pleasure, joy and contentment, because they are great beginnings of much growth of our holy faith and likewise of much more growth in the reputation of our kingdoms and domains, and we therefore take more pleasure in conducting this enterprise than for any other reason. Although the profits for the Treasury in this will be great, and because they are of this nature, we are certain that they will be the cause of great pleasure to you, as is right and we wish to give you this information because you
