_ 566 _ When he saw that it was true he thought it very strange, specially the fact that he had not been given the governorship, even though he had been appointed by the king. He then summoned the council and decided to take him to Cochin, seeing that he was the governor, and that all the king’s letters and instructions were addressed to him. While the marshal was still in Cannanore, Simao de Andrade and Antonio Pacheco arrived and went to see him; they gave him the Viceroy’s message and he was very pleased to see what good men they had brought. He did not attack Calicut because Afonso de Albuquerque advised against it, saying that he should first fetch more people from Cochin. They then left Cannanore and arrived in Cochin. When they arrived, the Viceroy sent men to visit the marshal in his ship and to offer him the fortress as a place where he could lodge. The marshal thanked him and said that he would stay with Afonso de Albuquerque. As the marshal disembarked the Viceroy came out to receive him at the beach, together with all the nobles and other dignitaries who were in Cochin. There was a tremendous noise as the gun salutes were fired when they disembarked.
