_ 573 _ of abbreviations and diacritical marks, mixed with words in Portuguese and German influenced by Portuguese, a task only to be undertaken by a specialist in German who at the same time had a knowledge of the Portuguese language and history. The choice was not difficult because it was obvious. Having decided to publish Valentim Femandes’ document in that excellent journal, the Boletim da Universidade de Coimbra, l immediately thought of Dr Albin Beau, Secretary of the Institute of German Studies of that university. I conveyed this intention and wish to Dr Salvador Dias Amaut, one of the professors of the University, and he agreed to speak to Dr Beau. However, a difficulty arose, upsetting for every reason, Dr Beau’s very poor state of health. But in spite of his suffering, the dedication and love the distinguished professor brings to letters and science overcame all obstacles. With persistence amounting to heroism the work was completed. First of all, cordial and affectionate greetings, I am at your service my dear sir, my good friend Stefan Gabler. I trust that God is keeping you in good health, for I am well and so are all my family.
