_ 138 _ When the governor saw that he was in danger he made a vow to Our Lady, promising to build a house in Goa dedicated to Our Lady of the Mountain, which was the name of his ship this he later fulfilled. He then ordered the pilot to drop anchor at the sand-bank thinking that it would be still higher and more dangerous ahead. As the pilot refused, the governor said he would have his head cut off and he replied by telling him to cut it off if he wished, because if they dropped anchor there, they would certainly be lost. Soon the ship left the sandbank behind, at a depth of five and a half "arms", and he then dropped anchor, as did also Lopo Vaz de Sampaio, Dom João de Eca, Pero da Fonseca de Crasto; Fernao Gomes de Lemos and Simao Velho, who were ahead of the governor, and Dom Garcia, Simao de Andrade, Manuel de Lacerde, and Aires da Silva, who were behind him. Atter this they all came to help him in their barges. The other captains who were some way ahead did not drop anchor, which annoyed the governor, so that he ordered Lopo. Vaz de Sampaio to stay in his ship whilst he himself went after the captains in his barge. Lopo Vaz de Sampaio was to decide how the ship should be taken away from the bank while the governor went after the others when he caught up with them, he ordered them to drop
