The Portuguese in the Sea of Oman

_ 146 _ you had granted me the grace of relieving me of half the tax established for Ormuz, and that the order for the reduction of twenty thousand xarafins had been sent to the Captain Major; who sent Henry to check the state of our heads, and then determine what was right: however, as the said Henry died on the way, I remained in the same state I was in. You, my Lord, know very well that the distance between us is great, and it will take a long time before the answer to our letters reaches us. Know finally that we are on God's account, and on you, and we have placed all our trust in you. Peace be with you. Written on 24 Shawal of 919 of the Hijrah; corresponding to August 27, 1513. Of Mohamed Shah King, and Governor of Ormuz. Notes: Mohammed Shah was King of Ormuz, the son of Saifuddin (which means Sword of the Faith), with whom Afonso de Albuquerque signed peace, and agreed the annual tribute he had to pay of 25,000 xerafins, to be paid in gold, silver and seed pearls, and of 5,000 xerafins as a contribution to the expenses of war and to the building of a fortress in a place to be chosen by Afonso de Albuquerque.
