_ 214 _ Item: When you are at sea and out of sight of land, if you encounter any ship, you will attempt to come within hailing distance of it, and if you learn that it is from Aden or Jiddah, you will take it without doing it any harm or damage or taking any booty, and bring it under guard to me to decide whether the said ship can be seized, or if it will be in the King’s best interest to let it go. You are advised that you must escort and treat it well, and if any harm or annoyance is caused or booty taken, restitution will be made at your own expense. Item: You are advised that you should not touch ships from Ormuz which show you a guarantee from its King or Governor because they derive it from me, since they cannot be provided with protection as are the other ports and towns which are under obedience to the King, our Lord. You should treat them honourably as vassals and subjects of His Highness, sending them on their way to Goa as agreed between myself and the King of Ormuz. Item: If in the region I have described, you should meet a ship or ships carrying horses, from Ash Shihr on the coast of Arabia, you should detain them and send them under guard to Goa because they are from places with which we do not have peace treaties; and they may be ships from this side of India which trade with it you must bring them
