The Portuguese in the Sea of Oman

_ 217 _ Item: If you wish to take other ships into your company and trade with them, you may do so by virtue of your warrant and licence to do so, but only in those places determined by His Highness and where you convey his factor on instructions from the factor of Cochin. The goods carried in the said ships are not to be sold except at the price at which the factor sells in that territory. Item: You may not take company in India for the trading and merchandise you are permitted by His Highness because the amount might be such that His Highness’s ship and merchandise could suffer delay and loss of value if you were not able to carry out your own business as quickly as that of the King, our Lord. You might cause such delay to the ship and in the exchange of His Highness’s goods that it could interfere with the business and provisioning of his factories in other places. Item: The merchandise you buy on your own account must be at the prices at which the factor of the King, our Lord, buys in the territory. You must not buy before him, but be prudent and take the factor’s advice so that it appears to the local people that all the merchandise is one stock and parcel because in that way you may profit and not harm His Highness’s business.
