_ 238 _ At once, Raix Noradim gave orders for a gate to be opened at the tower which faced the sea, and work continued until nightfall. On the following day, Palm Sunday, the governor ordered the task to be completed, and he sent Alvaro de Castro and Antonio de Azevedo with some men to guard those who were working. The gate was finally opened just before sunset, and our men at once went into the tower and took possession of it. When night fell the governor went to see it, accompanied by Dom Garcia and some other knights and nobles. At the entrance he knelt down with great pleasure and thanked Our Lord many times for giving him back the tower in peace. On Monday he gave orders for the whole headland upon which the fortress was built to be fenced in by a pallisade. This was made of baskets filled with sand and upon these shields were placed. In between each basket a cannon was positioned so that the fortress would be better protected, in case the Arabs wished to commit treachery, as on the previous occasion. It also served to ensure the safety of the officers who were to work within the enclosure, as well as that of the stonemasons, smiths and carpenters. These began work at once, and the governor also gave orders for stone to be quarried and gypsum dug, so that it could be baked and
