_ 391 _ The incident which most weakened him occurred near Dabul, where they encountered a ship, which had accompanied Lopo Soares. The captain and owner were one Joannes Impale, who, on the orders of Lopo Soares, was on his way to Diu to sell goods and to load clothing to take to Malacca, where he had in accordance with his contract, to load more cargo. This Joannes very confidentially related to him matters which were poison for his health, and very prejudicial to hie tranquility of spirit. Afonso de Albuquerque saw that the King had ordered the Government of India to act in a manner contrary to what he thought should be done and this, together with the contents of the letters he had received hastened his death. After Joannes had departed, Afonso de Albuquerque was showing signs of this deterioration in his health aa he arrived at the bar of the port of Dabul. He remained here only long enough to have brought to him come small quantities of figs, turnips and other produce, but these aroused in him little enthusiasm. Everything displeased him now, and he had no desire for anything except to reach Goa, which he called his promised land.
