The officials who distribute booty would not allow us to sell them because they had not yet divided them into tenths as they usually do, of which they steal a third part, so that they gave the order that they should not be sold and took them to Malacca. The Captain-1n-Chief gave one of than to the officials to divide according to shares, and they sold it for nine thousand five hundred gold cruzados, which are not as much as sixteen official carats, and were not worth seven thousands of other gold that I was getting. They did this because it seemed to be more gold, although it was of less value, and so that the difference would not seem as great from what I was getting for it.
