_ 129 _ Chapter: XXIIL When the governor had made ready his departure for Jidda, he gave up his governorship of India to Alexo de Meneses, whom he sent to winter in Cochin. The governor departed for Jidda on the 13th day of February 1520 with a fleet of twenty three vessels, including ten great ships whose captains were Diogo de Saldanha, Antonio Ferreira Fogaca, Sumai Suedez de Sousa, Fernao Gomez de Lemos, Pero de Silva, Pero Gomez Teixeira, magistrate-general, Antonio de Brito, chief huntsman to the King of Portugal, Antio Raposo and the captains of the two galleons Antonio de Saldanha and Don João de Lima. There were five gallies, whose captains were Cristovao de Sousa, Jeronimo de Sousa, Cristovao de Sa, Dinis Fernando de Melo and Jorge Barreto de Beja. There were also four-square rigged ships captained by Miguel de Monta, Gaspar d' Outel, Nuno Fernandes de Macedo and Anrique de Macedo. Then there were the two Latin caravelles captained by Lourenco Godinho and Pero Vaz de Vern and also some brigs which were serving the fleet. On the month of March, the governor arrived at Mete where after taking on water he ordered the place to be burned, it having been abandoned by its people.
