_ 146 _ and one of them took the magistrate by the hand into the church, which was built in the same style as the other one, on the altar was a large wooden retable on which were figures of the Holy Trinity, all three of the same age and size, and at the sides there were images of the four evangelists as in our churches. There was another altar on which there was a crucifix, with Our Lady on one side and St. John on the other. There was also a silver image of Our Lady and two other images, and two further altars and on the walls paintings of saints. He was also shown the sacristy, in which were many silken adornments, many challices of gold and silver, and other objects of divine worship. He was taken round all the various rooms and offices in the monastery which were all similar to ours, but it had only one bell. This was of copper, and lacked a clapper, having to be sounded by means of a mallet. Finally, they showed him a tall sarcophagus surrounded by Iamps, which were sometimes lighted. When the magistrate had seen the monastery he sat down with the head monk, who was called Samara Christao, and with him were five other monks, old and very thin, though they seemed well enough.
