_ 155 _ the letters was written in the hand of the Guazil and bore his seal. He said that if I wished to write to Suleiman or to some emir in his contry I should do so, since he intended to leave in three or four days time. I told him to bring me the Guazil’s letters so I could see them, and that I would write the others accordingly. He said that he would, and when he went for them I told all this to Muhammad Shah. He thought that we should make sure that in the interests of the King of Portugal the letters would not be delivered. When [Sujas] al-Din brought me the letters I asked him to leave them with me and said that I would give him mine when I returned the others. So he left them with me, and as soon as he had gone I went and showed them, and I hid them in a wall. The next day [Sujas] al-Din came and asked me for the letters, and I told him that I had lost them. Then he began to rant and swear, and he told two slaves to beat me so that because of the beating I would give him his letters back. On hearing this, Mir Muhammad Shah told me he thought we should never give the letters back, in the service of the King of Portugal. That is what we did.
