_ 198 _ lands of the Adil Khan on the mainland, which had been laid waste by the King of Bisnaga. At the request of one of the Adil Khan’s captains he had entered those lands courageously, and in the space of twelve days had made himself master of the main tanadarias, and leaving Rui Zuzarte there as field captain with some cavalry, he had returned to Goa. The Governor was pleased at this success and immediately took the necessary measures for the defense of those tanadarias together with other measures he considered urgent, and then went to Cochin, where he loaded all the carracks he could and sent them with António de Saldanha as commander, who indeed arrived safely in Lisbon. After this he made ready one of the most powerful fleets ever seen in these seas of India, for it consisted of 48 vessels, carracks, galleons, galleys, foists, brigantines and other oared ships, and with these and an appropriate number of captains and selected fighting men he left for Diu with the intention of taking that city if he could not by some other means build the fortress the King ordered him to establish in that port. He anchored there on 8 February 1521 at a time when Malik Ayyaz had gone to the court of the King of Cambay and had left in his place Malik [Sacca], his son.
