_ 83 _ outside the town before the arrival of Dom Garcia and Dom João and Simao d' Andrade sent word to the governor that he could enter the town as it was abandoned. This caused the governor much sadness as it seemed to him that Simao d' Andrade had sent him this message to affront him, and that he had been denied the honour of emptying the town. The governor spoke many words against him and afterwards sent him in the ship of Francisco de Tavora, his nephew, to the galley of João de Melo, in order to slight him. On entering the town our men found the imprisoned galley master Grigorio da Quadra of Braganca, a captain of the armada of Duarte de Lemos, who was lost as I said in Book II, and he told the governor that he had been held a prisoner for nine years. After taking charge of some provisions from the city the governor then ordered that it be set on fire, because if the people were able to return there after the seizure the Arabs could go there and take over the city once more. And after being set ablaze the whole city burned for four days, and not a house nor anything remained, for as the governor was in the port the Arabs did not dare to prevent the destruction.
