This same person says, that neither in Alexandria nor in the parts of Soria are there any spices, this is well guaranteed (?) this news, and here they are considered true ones. It is said, that the Turk dismissed the Bengalar Bey, Governor of Damascus, because it is stated that at the time when the caravan was proceeding to Mecca through those places as usual it was led astray on the road by the Arabs, and they say, through the fault of the said Bengalar Bey because he did not afford them a competent Captain for the defence of the caravan as they had asked of him before their departure, from which resulted to the caravan the loss of more than sixty thousand ducats. The people of Damascus on this account sent their envoys to the Turk complaining of Bengalar Bey, by which he sent a letter to the said Bengalar Bey that as soon as the present letter should be received that he should pacify the affair with those of the caravan, and to pay all the damage that had been done to them by the Arabs, and I think the wording was such, that they returned to the Turk, saying that he was no lord nor a lord of such power as it was stated, because he was not obeyed; the Turk took this very badly, and at once summoned him to come to Constantinople, and thus he was brought before the Turk, who had
