_ 221 _ Antonio da Silveira than went out to the city with a hundred Portuguese. He hanged and speared many Moors, especially those he saw with arms and seized four leading merchants in order to make use of them should he find the need. It was almost night when he withdrew to the fortress on the 10th of August. The next day the Moors who were already in the city began to rob some houses near the fortress in which there were many goods and provisions that the Portuguese in their haste had not been able to remove to the fortress. At the appeal of some who saw the robbing and wanted to go out to the Moors Antonio da Silveira sent with them a noble called Gaspar de Sousa. He attacked the Moors and put them to flight leaving some dead. One of the Portuguese was killed and others wounded. Nevertheless, they returned to the fortress laden with provisions. From then in Antonio da Silveira ordered them to go out to take them each day and to go in the guard of fifty-four men. In the same way wood and water from some wells next to the fortress was collected. To honour to Lopo de Sousa Coutinho he gave him command of this guard, which went to the city each day for provisions, wood and water. There were encounters with Moors and from some always died.
