_ 574 _ went to fetch them we found these dead. They were not to blame for their deaths, but the Governor, I think. We left this bay of Barum and went to Qiãn with great difficulty, where we found the ship, the Governor had sent there from his company which he sent to tell us that he was on his way to India. When we realized this, we were astonished, for this was not a thing for a Governor to do. The lascars were in great need here because the town is expensive and even water costs money, and on account of their needs and because all the men from the Strait were very poor and could not afford to be here, we left after a short time. This was somewhat against my wishes because I had crossed this ocean almost at the same time of year in a galley with Diogo da Silveira(A), and until we anchored at the bar of Diu I went with six pumps working. We left Qiãn with all these small vessels and the carrack the Governor had sent us as escort because it had a pilot and all the foists were sailing without one. We left on 12 August, and as soon as we were at sea the weather turned rough, and each one sailed as best his vessel could. The (A) Diogo da Silviera was commander at the time of Nuno da Cunha. Perhaps D.Manuel de Lima is here referring to the voyage of 1533, when the fleet, making for the coast at Diu, ran into a great storm which scattered the ships. (Couto, Década.4a, p. 220).
