Episodes of the year 1545 King Dom Joao III sent a letter to Dom Joao de Castro, the Viceroy of India, Ivora, on the 12th of March 1545, in which he mentioned the Portuguese fleet and the Red Sea:(11) The fleet set sail from the bar of Goa on 31st December 1540. It entered the Straits at the end of January 1541, and sailed to within sight of Suez. Dom João de Castro went there, having been entrusted with the difficult and dangerous task of spying on the Turkish fleet, which was in that port of call. This he completed on 27th April 1541. While on the mission, D. João de Castro wrote the “Sailing Directions”, which Jacinto Freire mentions here,
