_ 198 _ we landed the artillery, and as soon as they were set on the blocks we commenced to assault the wall on one part which had no trench. And in this way we assaulted it for four days as much as the artillery could furnish and as soon as we had wrecked a part of the height sufficient for us to be able to gain the top by the assistance of scaling ladders. I resolved upon entering in before razing it altogether which would take some days to accomplish, and I had received news that the king in person was coming in aid, for he was in Laza which was only a distance off a three days journey with fourteen or fifteen thousand men, and many horsemen and musqueteers and moreover great damage was being wrought upon us with the artillery and the musquetry of the fortress, and also many hourly alarms from those three or four thousand men with whom we fought on landing from all which our men were very fatiqued and still more in dread, more especially the Persians who are not accustomed to so many hardships, and however dangerous it might be to scale it.
