_ 210 _ They handed me one of Your Lordship’s provisions according to which I should send all the Sulphur possible from here, so I shall do so from now on. There is none in this land but I have spoken about it to a Jew who lived in this city because all the sulphur which comes here is obtained through him. I asked him how much we could except to have: he said that there would be no more than 30 bars of good, fine quality, sulphur annually, but a large amount of the other which is greatly inferior. I immediately ordered him to send someone to the place where the sulphur is extracted to find but how much we can have. This man could take 15 days to go there and come back. In this Monsoon, I shall endeavor to send all I can. Your Lordship ordered me to find that about the 20,000 pardaus or xerafins which are given to the Guazil for the Ambassadors. The factor told me that last year Martin Afonso de Sousa issued a provision ordering that he should not be given more than 11,000 xerafins. He receives these for the Ambassador appointments. This is all I have found out to date. I shall continue to make enquiries throughout the land and write to Your Lordship about anything else I find out and everything being done.
