_ 223 _ of Your Highness, sent to Cambay for [Meale] Khan Martim Afonso had at the time gone to their pagoda of Quilon(A) with letters from Ased Khan summoning him to be made King, and saying that he would place him in the port, which lies in the territories of Ased Khan. But Bastião Lopes Lobato, captain of the foist which went to fetch him, had written orders from D Garcia that they should bring him to the city of Goa, which they did. When he had come, Martim Afonso de Sousa arrived back from the pagoda of Quilon and began to negotiate with the Adil Khan to give him the places on the mainland, that is to say Bardes and Salsette, and eighty thousand pardaus in cash on condition that he did not hand over [Meale] Khan to Ased Khan, together with captains from Achin, and that he would send him to Malacca. After this, during this winter, Martim Afonso negotiated again with the Adil Khan that he would hand the Portuguese Governors, who could take his side in his frequent disagreements with the Adil Khan, his suzerain. (A) This a reference to Martim Afonso de Sousa's expedition in 1543 to steal the treasure from the pagoda at [Tebilicare] in the Kingdom of Quilon, ignoring the "obligations of peace and friendship" which they had with Quilon.
