The Portuguese in the Sea of Oman

_ 225 _ After this I sent for the Secretary(A) and asked him to say in the presence of everyone what he knew about this matter. Everyone told me with one voice that in no way in the world and for no price should this agreement be carried into effect because there would result from it for us great dishonor and little credit. Everyone was certain that, as soon as the Adil Khan had [Meale] Khan in his power, he would kill him and take from us once again the lands which he would give us in exchange for [Meale] Khan, so that we would not hand them over to Nizam Malik and the people of his kingdom. We could have no better guarantee from the Adil Khan that we would remain in possession of these lands than if we did not hand over [Meale] Khan to him, but kept him in our hands. Many arguments in addition to these were presented, and these brought to my memory that we could expect little veracity and reliability of the Adil Khan, who had given up making war upon us for fear we would hand over [Meale] Khan to Ased Khan and the other captains of Achin. I ordered the Secretary to make an agreement from all these matters and opinions, and everyone signed it. (A) Cosme Anes was Secretary of India at that time.
