In the same year (1546) Dom Joao de Castro, Governor of India, sent a letter to King Dom Joao III, Diu, on the 16th of December 1546, describing the advance of the Turks towards Basra:(89) PP. 223-4 On 30th January I was informed from Ormuz that the Turks garrisoned in Babylon(A) had moved down the Euphrates and captured a province called Zaquia, where they built a fortress on the banks of the river Euphrates, on the Persian side, about a day and a half's journey up-river from the city of Basra. As soon as I learned this, I wrote to the King of Basra (A) Because it was near the site of ancient Babylon, this name was often given to the city of Baghdad.
