The Portuguese in the Sea of Oman

_ 83 _ Viceroy D. Antaão delegated Gaspar Pires de Matos, Chief Treasury Officer of Ormuz, to inquire into the matter, the result of which follows. Copy of a paragraph of the order given by the Viceroy D. Antão de Naronha concerning the macarrias paid by the customs house of Ormuz to ShahTahmasp and other neighbouring kings, taken from the book of his standing orders in the factory of Ormuz, on fos. 10 and 11. In the first standing order, it is stated that each year, two hundred and five leagues thirteen azars should be given from the revenues of the customs house for payments to rulers and kings whose states border on the Kingdom of Ormuz and their ambassadors who go there to collect these payments, and the expenses of the time spent collecting them. Exception is made for the King of Basra who does not receive it, and because I am informed that large part of these macarrias were paid incorrectly by His Highness’s Treasury, I sent Gaspar Pires de, Chief Treasury Officer, of the fortress of Ormuz to explain that this payment is not necessary either at the present time or in the future as long as there is sun to shine. This will hold without contradictions or other interpretation.
