The safe–conducts Your Lordship granted me last year for the carracks of the Moors, or rather the Malabaris of Cannanore, to Mocha, are three, and I know that, in addition to those Your Lordship granted me, three or four sailed. I know that it is not in the service of the King of Portugal for these Malabari Moors to go to the other coast without safe-conducts , for pepper ships go from here to the other coast, and pepper comes from there in those carracks, which bring Rumes and Turks who are not merchants and carry goods from there which undercut goods from Portugal, that is to say cloth, coral, satins and other prohibited goods; and on their return voyage they take these people like other merchants, who put all their money into pepper and ginger. If such bad people come, they will cause a great deal of unrest in the land. In past years people such as these did not come, only this year, and Your Lordship can be certain that, the carracks of Khwaja Shams-al-Din, who is a loyal vassal of the King of Portugal, these carracks come directly in to the port of Cannanore, as Your Lordship expects.
