_ 167 _ In the same year (1547) Francisco da Cunha sent a letter to the Viceroy from Goa, dated September 1547, and it is mentioned that he did not know anything about that matter:(40) I have never visited Basra, nor do I know anything about it, and I have not been to Ormuz for eighteen years, so I know nothing about the matter and am unable to say anything except from hearsay or from information that I received from people who came from Ormuz and understand something about this business. Consequently, I say that in my view Your Lordship should expressly forbid anyone from going to Basra, or any ships, terradas or other vessels in which provisions or merchandise can travel to leave Ormuz, because it seems that nothing will make the Turks in Basra depart (40) Document no. and reference.
