_ 169 _ In the same year (1547) Diogo Alvares Teles sent a letter to the Viceroy, from Goa, dated September 1547, and his opinion was to expel the Turks from Basra:(41) According to what is reported about the Turks, they are a people of such a nature and disposition that, in order to achieve their ends and do business, they do not deal with or employ more truth with their own families and those closely related by law, life and customs than necessity requires. Consequently, it is clear that they are going to come to Basra and want to do business there. So, since they do not converse with or use the truth with those I mention, it is to be expected that much less will they do so with us, because we are so different to them in faith, life-style and customs.
