The Portuguese in the Sea of Oman

_ 178 _ In the same year (1547) Manuel Coutinho responded to the proposal put forward by the Governor in the council, regarding commercial maritime transport to Basra, Goa, on the 26th of September 1547, supporting the estab-lishment of a maritime line between Ormuz and Basra:(45) Sir, it is my opinion that sailing from the fortress of Ormuz to Basra is not harmful to the interests of Our Lord the King, nor do I find it in any way disadvantageous to the Turks, because if some wish to claim that by denying it to the Turks, they will leave there, I do not agree. The great interests they have there are the only things that make them stay, and now, they have captured it with the aim we all think, they will not leave even if we deny the place to them.
