_ 192 _ In the same year (1547) Dom Alvaro Coutinho sent a letter to the Viceroy, from Goa, on the 28th of September 1547, supporting the establishment of the shipping line between Ormuz and Basra:(48) Sir, Your Lordship ordered me to state my opinion about preventing shipping between Ormuz and Basra. I say, Sir, that it should not be hindered because those who are conquering the world will be caused little inconvenience by being deprived of their drugs. It is well-known that they have food in abundance. Basra is a Lombardy, which these kingdoms need more than drugs. May it be Our Lord’s wish and Your Lordship’s good fortune to expel them from Basra, as the people of Aden did. (48) Document no. and reference.
