_ 197 _ In the same year (1547) D. Manuel de Lima sent a letter to D. João de Castro, Viceroy of India, Ormuz, on the 30th of September 1547, and he mentioned his refusal to contact Basra:(51) Sir, As regards what Your Lordship commands me, to give my opinion on the presence of the Turks in Basra and whether there will be trade and friendship with them, my reply is that, from the information I have about Basra and the siege there, my opinion is that Your Lordship should not consent to anyone taking merchandise or anything else from Ormuz or any other port in India to Basra, nor to their having any trade or friendship with the Turks there, and there should be very severe penalties for doing so.
