The Portuguese in the Sea of Oman

_ 214 _ Translation of the letter from the King of Ormuz to our lord, the King. From this House and Kingdom of Ormuz, 27 October in the year 1547 to the true, most high and powerful state, resplendent like the sun and King of all Kings, King D João, whose kingdoms and possessions and justice may God in His mercy preserve. I offer myself to your power and place myself in your shade and kiss your sacred hands, from which I hope for favours and honours and remind you to be mindful of me as your servant, who am ready to obey his every command in the manner of my brother. King Muhammad Shah and likewise King Abba Nosrat Shah deceased. I hereby make known that on the death of the King my brother in the time when Sheikh Rashid served as guazil and António da Silveira as Captain, all the leaders of the Moors and Christians assembled and together asked, the Moorish people of this city if there was in Ormuz a son of the King who could be raised to the kingship. All the Moors said that Ormuz could not be without a King, and they all responded because I am that if there was a man to raise to the kingship it was I, brother of King Muhammad Shah.
