_ 266 _ the cost to the treasury of his lord the King of Portugal will be paid. Also, since the equipping of the ships was in order to protect the city and to enable the carracks to reach the port to the benefit of the King and his customs houses, the King will undertake to provide for them; and he will give houses and residences to the Portuguese who have to remain there in which they may live. Item: The King of Aden will undertake never to make peace with the Turks or to allow any lascar in Turkish pay into his city, nor permit any Turkish merchant to come there, and this no man of Turkish nationality will be allowed in the city so that there will be no brawls and affrays between them and the Portuguese. Item: Portuguese who go to Aden with their goods and merchandise will pay no customs dues, nor will they be asked for any other form of tax or interest but will sell their merchandise freely and buy local goods freely, without any form of dues, tax or interest being required from them. But Moorish and Hindu merchants who go there will pay the usual dues as is customary.
