The Portuguese in the Sea of Oman

_ 267 _ Moors and Hindus who send their merchandise as freight will pay dues; goods belonging to Portuguese which are carried by Moorish ships will pay no dues. Item: The Governor undertakes to grant safe-conducts to all ships and merchants who wish to go to the city of Aden from India if they are not going from territory of his enemies, so that the city will become noble and rich. Item: The King of Aden undertakes that if the King of Portugal wishes to build a fortress in the city of Aden, he will give him a site to do this wherever the Governor of India thinks best. Law and government in the city will however always be in the hands of the King of Aden, and no captain of the fortress will have any power or authority in any matter concerning the city or the Moors, but only over the Portuguese who accompany him. Such Portuguese will offer no offence to any Moor in the city or any foreigner who lives there, and if any case of this occurs the captain will at once punish it severely, if the King requires him to do so. Item: They agreed that if the Governor and the King decide jointly to make war on the coast of Arabia, all the towns and land they may take between El Shihr and Mocha will belong to the King of Aden, and the Portuguese will have nothing.
